Everything You Need to Know About Becoming Gas Safe Registered

If you’re looking to work legally and safely on gas appliances in the UK, Gas Safe registration isn’t just important — it’s a legal requirement. Whether you're starting a new career in the heating industry or setting up your own gas business, getting on the Gas Safe Register is the first essential step.

At Gas-Go Heating, we’re proud to be Gas Safe Registered, and we’re here to help others understand the process, requirements, and benefits of achieving this important status.

🔍 What Is the Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is the UK’s official list of engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas appliances, such as boilers, cookers, fires, and meters. It replaced CORGI registration in 2009.

Only engineers and businesses listed on the Gas Safe Register can legally install, service, or repair gas appliances in homes or businesses in the UK, Isle of Man, and Guernsey.

You can check any engineer’s credentials at www.gassaferegister.co.uk.

📋 Why Do You Need to Be Gas Safe Registered?

It’s the law – Unregistered gas work is illegal and dangerous

It builds trust – Customers look for the Gas Safe logo when hiring engineers

It opens doors – Many landlords, councils, and employers won’t work with unregistered installers

It ensures safety – Registration means your skills and knowledge are up to national standards

🛠️ How to Become Gas Safe Registered: Step-by-Step

1. Get the Right Qualifications

Before applying, you need relevant training and qualifications, such as:

  • ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) – Most common route
  • Or NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in gas installation and maintenance
  • Or apprenticeships with gas training included

Make sure you complete both theoretical and practical assessments.

🔧 No qualifications = no registration.

2. Gain Real-World Experience

If you’re new to the industry, you’ll need on-site experience working under the supervision of a qualified engineer. Many courses include a portfolio phase to build up real-world evidence.

3. Apply for Gas Safe Registration

Once you’ve qualified, apply directly via the Gas Safe Register website:

  • Fill out the application form
  • Provide evidence of your qualifications
  • Pay the registration fee (approx. £400 for initial application)
  • Book and pass a Gas Safe site visit assessment

4. Receive Your Licence & Gas Safe ID Card

Once accepted, you'll receive:

  • Your Gas Safe ID card
  • Your registration number
  • Access to list your business on the public Gas Safe database

🪪 Always carry your Gas Safe card when working – it’s proof you’re legally registered.

🔁 How Often Do You Need to Renew?

Gas Safe Registration must be renewed every 12 months. You must also:

  • Stay up to date with training and qualifications. ACS needs to be done every 5 years.
  • Add new competencies (e.g., LPG, flueing, etc.) as your services expand

🚫 What Happens If You Work Without Being Registered?

  • Fines or prosecution
  • Bans from working in the industry
  • Invalid insurance
  • Endangering lives (including your own)

Customers can also report unregistered work directly to the Gas Safe Register, which can result in enforcement action.

👷 Can a Business Be Gas Safe Registered?

Yes. A business (such as a heating company) must register as a Gas Safe business and nominate a qualified engineer as the “responsible person.”

This allows multiple engineers to operate under one company registration — ideal for growing teams like ours at Gas-Go Heating.
